Engeland verloor gisteren met 2-3 van Kroatië en kwalificeerde zich niet voor het EK. De laatste keer dat Engeland zich niet kwalificeerde voor een toernooi was tegen Nederland. Graham Taylor was toen de bondscoach. The Guardian viste dit stukje schitterende sociaal-realistisch drama uit de Britse school op uit YouTube. Ken Loach had het niet beter kunnen doen:

Ben Goldacre is boos. Boos op de homeopaten en boos op de media. Hij legt in The Guardian nog maar weer eens uit hoe je een goed medisch onderzoek opzet en waarom het zo moet en niet anders.

Goldacre heeft ook een website, badscience.net, waar hij gehakt maakt van bijvoorbeeld weer eens het zoveelste onderzoek dat seksisme verkoopt onder de naam 'evolutionaire psychologie'.

De Universiteit van Utah heeft een interactief proefdierexperiment in Flash om uit te leggen hoe drugs werken. Ietwat gecensureerd (muizen overleven dit soort onderzoek in de regel niet), maar wel educatief.

Hij doet zijn best, maar toch blijft Louisiana altijd een mysterie voor ons Europeanen...

Dit lijkt wel een dialoog uit een Wes Anderson film: het is licht absurdistisch, nogal stoned en oppervlakkig gezien oppervlakkig, maar daaronder gebeurt van alles tegelijk.

Net als in Andersons films is wat oppervlakkig lijkt namelijk de onmacht en/of onwil verbaal direct te communiceren en dan vooral vanuit een soort stiff upper lip-mentaliteit. Ondertussen worden er dan wel allerlei subtiele signalen afgegeven. Dat zit ook in The Life Aquatic, wat voor mij dan ook niet het plaatjesboek is waar veel mensen het voor houden. Voor mij staat zelfs de performance van Bill Murray (meer nog dan Wilson de perfecte Anderson acteur, hoewel ik ook Hugh Laurie graag eens in een van zijn films zou willen zien) in die film qua subtiliteit en diepgang op gelijke hoogte met die in het veel bejubelde Lost in Translation. En dan krijg je er dus nog de briljante art direction bij ook.

Dillinger Escape Plan en Witchcraft hebben zich eigenlijk al min of meer geplaatst voor de longlist.

Natuurlijk waren er ook zeperds: Maxïmo Park en LCD Soundsystem kwamen beiden met saaie albums waar ze het punkige dat ze eerder zo goed maakte hadden weggepolijst. Maar mijn muzikale dieptepunt was toch wel White Chalk, waarop PJ Harvey werkelijk alles wat haar één van mijn favoriete artiesten maakte opzij schuift ten faveure van kattengejank over pianogepingel.

Laat voor de interactiviteit even weten wat ik over het hoofd heb gezien en wat aantoont dat ik absoluut geen smaak heb. Helemaal blij ben ik als je in de lijst iets fantastisch ontdekt dat je nog niet kende.
