Science wil dat ik lid word. Voor "the modest annual dues of $215" ontvang ik 51 nummers en een "FREE, limited edition AAAS shirt."

Dat is niet verkeerd, denk ik zo. Als je lid wordt van Oor, krijg je een MP3-speler ter waarde van 99 euro. En toen ik onlangs lid werd van de Up mocht ik een gratis cd'tje uitkiezen. Maar goed, dat zijn dan ook maar goedkope blaadjes vol triviale artikelen over popmuziek. Zoiets exclusiefs als een "FREE, limited edition AAAS shirt" krijg je alleen bij een blad-met-inhoud als Science, uitgegeven door een club-met-historie als de American Association for the Advancement of Science, opgericht door niemand minder dan Edison zelf.

Het is dan ook niet meer dan terecht dat uitgever Beth Rosner mij in het begeleidend schrijven verzekert dat "You'll feel good about joining AAAS. And why not? You'll be doing good."

En daar komen dan nog elke maand zulke sprankelende artikelen als Vibrational Energy Transfer Across a Reverse Micelle Surfactant Layer bij. Toch moet ik er vanaf zien.

Op het "FREE, limited edition AAAS shirt" staat namelijk diezelfde Einsteinpop als op de envelop. En die vind ik doodeng.
